What is Caesar’s?: How the Internal Law Eliminates the External State

In this article I will make the argument that a consistent application of the Law, especially the law of personhood and property, necessarily eliminates any and all justification for an external state.  I use the qualifier “external” deliberately to contrast this with the internal governance of the Law. This argument is not an argument for anarchy, as some state advocates might claim. Indeed, by eliminating the external state, we establish the internal law.

The Seven Conclusions:

1. Government claims to own property are illogical and unlawful.

2. The concept of a nation is illogical and unlawful.

3. National borders are illogical and unlawful.

4. Government action is illogical and unlawful.

5. Property can only be owned lawfully, that is be rightful possession and usage. Any property not owned lawfully, that is by violating the personhood and property of another person, is subject to forfeiture.

6. All property acquired by fraud or force is subject to forfeiture.

7. All property acquired by government force or financial fraud, such as national parks, military equipment, public parks, silver, gold, and titles for homes and cars is subject to forfeiture.

The Four Premises Leading to the Conclusions:

1. Property is the right to use a thing.

2. Every person has a right to own and use what they possess. Possession and ownership are synonymous.

3. The only irreducible and unquestionable property is a person’s own self, that is their physical body and their conscious mind, which I will call the right to personhood. This irreducible right to personhood eliminates all forms of slavery and is the basis for our understanding of violations against personhood such as assault, murder, and rape.

4. By extension of this right to personhood, a person may own objects such as land, houses, factories, and other resources. This act of ownership is a derived from purposeful action and established by evidentiary observation of possession and usage, which I will call the right to property. The right to property is the basis for our understanding of violations against property such as theft, fraud, and taxation.

The Seven Scriptures Used to Justify These Premises:

1. Matthew 22:21: “Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s”

2. Haggai 2:8: “‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine’ declares the LORD Almighty.”

3. Psalm 24:1-2 “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it and all who live in it.”

4. Matthew 26.52: “Those who live by the sword, die by the sword.”

5. Romans 6:23: “The wages of sin is death”

6. 1 Corinthians 6:20 “You were bought with a price. Therefore honor and glorify God with your body.”

7. Luke 17:21: “The kingdom of God is within you.”

6 Deductions from Scripture

1. A Caesar may possess and use property, such as gold. If so, you should pay him what is his, not as a government or a king, but as an exceptionally wealthy individual.

2. In order for Caesar to properly own property, including gold, he must lawfully obtain it from God who is the original owner. He cannot own anything unlawfully, that is by violating the fundamental laws of personhood or the property of others. If he obtained it by conquest and by the sword, his life and property is subject to conquest and forfeit as well.

3. Sinning against the Law of God, namely his law of personhood and property, forfeits one’s rights to the possession and use of God’s property, namely the whole world, including your life.

4. All men, including the highest Caesar and the lowest peasant are equal under the Law.

5. God has paid the price of your sin with the death of His Son. This payment is accessed by faith and reconciles law breakers back to God’s world. Through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for sins, saints counted righteous before the Law may once again own their life, body, and property, not unlawfully by the sword, that is by violations of personhood or property, but lawfully by proper possession and usage.

6. The principles of personhood and property therefore have their origins within the heart of each redeemed sinner and extend outward to the extent are person has the vision and competency to possess and use the natural world. By this principle, the kingdom of God is within you and spreads out from you. By this principle, redeemed sinners may eviscerate all unlawful claims of ownership and rights, such as the right of a government to own property by conquest or tax by coercion. By this principle, saints are free from the power of the sword and understand that anything acquired by the sword is subject to punishment under the law. By this principle, saints become perfect judges.  As Paul says to the Corinthians, “Do you not know that we will judge angels. How much more so the things of this life!” (1 Corinthians 6:3-4).

How to Live Under the Law of Christ

1. Acknowledge that you have broken the law. Say, “I have broken the Law. I have lived by the sword. I have lied. I have cheated. I have not worshipped God as he deserves. I have stolen from God and murdered Him.”

2. Acknowledge that justice demands that God, the rightful owner of your property, must separate you from your life and property. Say, “I deserve to be punished and separated forever from the property of God and His life. My punishment is necessary.”

3. Believe, by the evidence of the life and death of God’s son and heir, Jesus Christ, that God has pardoned you of your sins completely. Say, “By the blood of Jesus Christ, the perfect substitute for my sins, I have been forgiven completely and am free from the punishment of the Law.”

4. Become a subject of God’s law free of sin by resisting the temptation of evil, that is the temptation to acquire your life and property by force or fraud. Call others such as government officials, financial institutions, neighbors, and family members to repent of their crimes. By your redeemed life, you will glorify the mercy of God and the beautify of His Law.

5. Extend the expression of your personhood and property as far as you can, being generous to those in need while being firm against those who would seek to separate you again from your life and property. In this way, you will store up for yourselves rewards with the one who owns the whole universe.

Practical Applications:

1. Debt Defaults:

  • One application of this is to take out loans from banks to acquire real assets without repaying the loans. Because the loans are generated by fraud, they are not lawful means of securing property. Banks and lending institutions have no right to anything acquired by them. You however will be in possession of these assets and this is a proper means of securing property. “So you shall plunder the Egyptians” (Exodus 3:22).

2. Stop Paying Taxes:

  • Another application of this is to stop paying taxes or voluntarily submitting to any government edict that violates your personhood or property. Property taxes, income taxes, DMV regulations, or other non-consensual rules are rightfully and morally ignored with impunity.

3. Stop Working for Dollars:

  • Stop contributing your creativity and productivity to a system that actively violates the personhood and property of others. This means one ought not accept dollars for goods and services, including one’s own labor. “You were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:20). “You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24). Look to God for your provision and use your time and effort to extend His kingdom. Find other saints with resources and ask for their generosity, provision, and support. For “what do we have that we have not received?” (1 Corinthians 4:7). Rejoice in sufferings and find contentment in being in want. Do not fall into the temptation of worrying about what you will eat or where you will live. Your Heavenly Father knows you need these things. “Seek first the kingdom of heaven and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
4. Stop Engaging in the Politics of the External State
  • Refuse to engage in discussions that assume that it’s right to violate personhood and property. All talk of national borders, national budgets, or the actions of the State are worthless. Focus instead on the workings of the inner law, those who have violated it, how to be forgiven for the just punishment of crimes, and how to honor the inner law of Christ on earth through complete submission to it.

Summary:

Secular statement of self-governance:

Neither state ownership of property nor state action can be justified without violating individual rights to personhood and property. Self-governance under the law of logic is the only true government.

Written using the Word of God:

There is only one Law and one Lawgiver, Jesus Christ who is the Son of God and the Word of God. Those who live by the sword of the anti-Christ will die by the sword of the anti-Christ. The meek, those who submit themselves completely to God, will inherit the earth.
